Choosing the Right Windows is all About Location, Location, Location

In real estate, it's all about location, bigstock-A-perfect-neighborhood-Houses-167769962.jpglocation, location--and the same is true when it comes to choosing the right windows for home.

When buying windows, it's important to consider where your house is located as well as where the windows are located within your house. Both factors can have significant impact on everything from your home's energy efficiency, to comfort and to curbside appeal.

If you're in the market for new windows, take a look at how the location can and should help determine which windows you buy:

Picking the Right Pane

Windows typically have one, two or three layers of glass. Which option is right for you depends on where you live.

In areas where the weather is always warm, the single-pane option should be sufficient. If you live in an area where the weather fluctuates between cool and warm, hot and cold, you're probably going to want to choose the double-pane option. And if you live where the mercury drops below freezing, the triple-pane option is probably best to keep you warm and cozy all winter long.

Picking the right pane can play an important role in helping to keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter without spending a bundle on heating and cooling costs.

Finding the Right Frame

When it comes to frames, you've got a lot of options. Frames are typically made from vinyl, wood, aluminum, composite and fiberglass. Which option is right for you depends on your budget, the climate in which you live and your personal preferences.

Vinyl frames tend to be the least expensive and can accommodate a variety of climates, but your color options will likely be limited. Wood frames are always popular because they look so good, but they cost a bit more and don't always hold up well in humid or rainy climates. Composite frames offer both value and eye appeal. They are also cost- and energy-efficient and tend to last a long time.

Of all the options, however, fiberglass frames typically deliver the best value. Even though they are the most expensive, they look great, don't warp (even in the most extreme climates) and are excellent insulators.

Seeking Sunlight (or Shelter)

The sun rises in the east, sets in the south--and can bake your home all day long.

The location of your windows within your home can play a big role in keeping your energy costs under control and keeping you comfortable.

Windows on the south and north sides of your homes don't typically see a lot of sunshine, so you probably won't need to worry about tinting them (although shades are always a nice option).

On the other hand, windows on the east and west sides of your home are susceptible to solar heat gain, so tinting them can help keep you comfortable while controlling cooling costs.
