Any good business is built on providing a quality product with exceptional customer service. But some businesses are simply looking to make a quick buck - and are willing to go to any lengths to do so, even if that means lying and committing fraud. Unfortunately, roofing company scams are often not discovered immediately. By the time the roof starts falling to pieces, the roofing company is long gone. Protect your home and family by familiarizing yourself with these common scams irreputable roofing companies use.

Bait and Switch

Bait and switch is a basic scam technique - offer one thing and provide another. One method irreputable roofing companies use is to sell the customer a high quality roofing material at a premium price, but actually use cheap, inferior materials. The other technique is to sell a particular roofing material that then suddenly goes "out of stock". The company then pressures the homeowner to immediately pick out new, more expensive roofing materials.

Cutting Corners

In addition to the bait and switch trick, irreputable roofing companies can cut corners in other ways to maximize the change in their pockets. Typically, the roofer will use fewer shingles, nails, and other materials than is necessary. The homeowner is astonished at how quickly their beautiful new roof was able to be completed - until the first major storm comes through and causes serious damage that could have been avoided with a proper, professional roofing installation.

The New Kid in Town

In any successful crime, fleeing the scene of the crime is critical. Some irreputable roofing companies roll into a new town with flashy equipment and logos. They promise only the best while ripping people off. Before their scam is discovered, the company is gone without a trace. They've already moved on to a new town to start the scam all over.

When choosing local roofing contractors, always keep a few things in mind: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Don't allow the company to force you into any decisions - take time to do your research. And if something doesn't feel quite "right", contact other roofing companies for a second opinion.
