How Roof Ventilation Protects Your Roof & Your Home

Posted by First Quality Roofing & Insulation on Feb 14, 2023 5:51:44 PM

During the winter in Las Vegas, allowing cold outside air into any part of your home may seem counter-intuitive, but a roof ventilation system does exactly that. A constant flow of air on the underside of the roof deck can not only extend the life span of your roof, but it can improve your comfort and protect your home from leaks and roof damage.

How Does Roof Ventilation Work?

In a typical roof ventilation system, outside air enters through intake vents in the soffit, under the eaves - or the lowest part of the roof - and it flows upwards toward the peak on the underside of the roof deck. Near the peak of the roof is either a ridge vent or several box vents that allow air to exit. The air moves naturally upwards through a combination of wind and the chimney effect.

The Benefits of Roof Ventilation

Roof ventilation is essential in any home, and it provides several tangible benefits, including:

  • Longer roof life – High heat can break down the asphalt in composite shingles, allowing them to shred granules and shorten their overall lifespan. Proper ventilation allows hot air that collects in the attic during the summer to escape, cooling the underside of your roof.
  • Greater comfort – During the summer months, heat from the hot air trapped in the attic can migrate into your home, forcing your air conditioning system to work harder to keep you cool. Not only can proper roof ventilation increase your comfort, but it can cut your cooling costs.
  • Preventing ice dams and leaks – In the winter, air that leaks from your living space can warm the underside of the roof, melting snow that then runs down and refreezes over the eaves, where there is no conditioned space underneath. This is called an ice dam, and it can allow water to back up behind the dam on warmer days, leading to roof damage and leaks. A working ventilation system keeps the underside of the roof cooler, preventing the formation of ice dams.
  • Fewer moisture problems – Heat from your home naturally rises, escaping into the attic and bringing with it moisture from cocking, cleaning, showers, and more. In the cooler attic, it can condense, creating moisture problems, wood rot, mold, and water damage. A roof ventilation system helps this moisture to escape, minimizing damage to your home.
