Moving furniture can be a backbreaking – and furniture breaking! – chore that can leave you more than a little frustrated. The following are some tips that can help make the task easier as you move into your Nevada home or apartment and start planning your Las Vegas home improvements:
Make a plan
Measure your new rooms and furniture before you move so you can sketch a plan of exactly where you want everything to be. As you and your helpers move furniture in, have a copy of the plan taped to the wall in each room so everyone will where to put each item. That way, you won’t have to move any furniture twice.
Protect your furniture
If you don’t protect your furniture while you’re moving, you could end up with some serious damage by the time you reach your destination as items jostle against one another. Buy some moving blankets and stretch film, and completely wrap furniture with the blankets before securing it with the film.
Slide furniture instead of carrying it
Sliding furniture is much easier than carrying it. Buy sliders at home improvement stores or online, or make your own. Hard plastic items like container covers or Frisbees can be used to slide furniture on carpet, or use soft sliders like towels, carpet remnants, or moving blankets to slide items on hard floors.
Take items apart when possible
Sometimes taking an item apart can reduce its size enough to easily maneuver through a doorway. For example, you can remove the feet from a sofa or knobs from a dresser to gain a few extra inches of clearance.
Stand couches on their ends
Carrying a couch horizontally and trying to maneuver it down a hallway and through a door is just about impossible in some cases. Instead, put the couch on its end, sliding it to the doorway. You’ll want the feet of the couch positioned to enter the doorway first. Angle the couch so its back and bottom form a V, and with a person positioned on both the inside and outside of the door, angle the couch by sliding the seat through the door.
Remove your door or doorstop molding
If you have a large item that you absolutely can’t fit through a doorway no matter how you angle it, you can also try removing the door. If that doesn’t work, removing the doorstop molding should give you a little bit more room.
