There are many benefits of having a tree in your yard Trees help purify the air and provide shade that helps cool your house. They also enhance the aesthetic appeal of your property by adding color and creating a focal point. Many people are daunted by the thought of planting a tree because they think it increases the need for Las Vegas home maintenance when, in actuality, a tree that is planted correctly requires very little upkeep.

Tree-Planting Tips to Avoid Additional Las Vegas Home Maintenance

Choosing the Right Spot

When deciding where to plant your tree, it is important to consider the size that the tree will be when it is fully grown. Planting it too close to the house can be hazardous for both the tree and the structure of your home. You should also note the quality of the soil you intend to plant the tree in. Does it contain enough nutrients? Is it deep enough for the tree’s roots to expand and grow?

Digging a Proper Hole

Before you begin digging your hole, you must first know where your utility lines are. If you do not know where these lines are, you can call 811 and request to have them marked for you. Once you know these boundaries, you can begin digging. Create a saucer-shaped hole that is 3 – 5 times the diameter of the tree’s root ball.

It is important not to go too deep as the tree’s root collar (the trunk flare just above the root ball) needs to stand about an inch above the soil line. To determine the correct depth that the hole should be, remove the tree from its container, then measure the distance from the bottom of the root ball to the root collar. This is the depth that you need to dig the center of the hole. After you’ve finished digging your hole, use a garden hoe or spade to loosen the soil so that it’s easy for the tree’s roots to grow.

Planting Your Tree

When you’re ready to plant you’re tree, start by loosening the roots. Lower the tree into the hole, making sure the roots are spread out. If you dug the hole properly, the tree should sit comfortably in the center, with the root collar above the soil line. Once your tree is set, backfill the hole with the dirt you removed.

Setting the Surrounding Area

After filling the hole completely, cover the soil around the tree with a shallow layer of mulch – making this too deep can restrict the passage of water to the roots. Finally, create a barrier around the base of the tree – using stone, brick or metal – to protect it from being damaged by lawn mowers and weed cutters.

A tree that is planted properly requires little maintenance and adds to your property’s curb appeal. By following the steps listed above, you will avoid any potential issues right from the start.
