Daylight Savings Time is the ideal reminder to take care of some of those important home maintenance tasks that are easy to delay or forget. Check out the following post-Daylight Savings Time to-do list to help keep your home in good condition:
Declutter Your Home
Spring isn’t the only time of year you should be eliminating clutter. Use Daylight Savings Time as a reminder to go through your household items and clothes to get rid of what you no longer need or want.
Check Your Medicine Cabinet and Pantry
It’s the perfect time to look in your medicine cabinet and pantry and dispose of expired food and medicine. You can use the room you gain to make sure that what’s left in your cabinets is well organized and easily accessible.
Flip Your Mattress
Since you should flip and rotate your mattress twice a year, Daylight Savings Time is a good reminder to do that. This will help your mattress wear more evenly and be more comfortable. If you have a pillowtop mattress, just rotate it and skip the flip.
Check and Maintain Your Filters
Check your heating and air conditioning filter and replace it if needed. Some filters are reusable, so if you have one of this type, just wash it off thoroughly outside. Also check the water filter in your refrigerator and the HEPA filter in your vacuum cleaner while you’re at it and clean or replace them as needed.
Replenish Your Emergency Kit
Check your emergency kit to make sure you still have a good stock of fresh batteries, medications, bandages, and any other necessary items. You’ll need to be able to count on your emergency supplies being there and in usable condition when you need them.
Flush Your Water Heater
Take a look at your water heater to make sure it’s not leaking and flush out any sediment that’s trapped inside. It’s easy to forget these tasks, but they’ll help maintain your water heater’s ability to do its job and extend its longevity.
Change Your Smoke Alarm Batteries
You hear it often, but it’s still good advice – change your smoke alarm batteries as Daylight Savings Time ends. This will help keep you safe, as well as prevent that annoying chirp that signifies a dying battery.
Check Your Roof and Gutters
Make sure your gutters are clear of debris, so they’ll continue to funnel water away from your home and its roof and foundation.
