Unpacking, re-packing and storing Christmas decorations tends to be a big project for many people. Precarious storage spaces, damaged ornaments, lights that don’t work and other hassles can be avoided with a few proactive measures. Here are some tips to help keep your decorations organized and easily accessible:
Tips for Organizing Your Christmas Decorations
Store Sturdy Ornaments in a Box with Dividers
A box that has segmented parts is perfect for storing ornaments that are not fragile. While you can buy containers like this, a cardboard wine box also works well. Cardboard containers, rather than plastic ones, are recommended because cardboard won’t keep in moisture like plastic.
Protect Fragile Ornaments
Use several layers of tissue paper to wrap up all of your ornaments that are easily breakable. Place them in a container with crumpled newspaper filling any extra spaces to keep the ornaments from moving and breaking.
Keep Strands of Lights Functional
Test all of your lights to make sure they work before putting them away for the year. If any bulbs are dead, replace them, and if any strands of lights don't work, throw them away. Store each strand, untangled, separately in a gallon-sized zip lock bag.
Store Decorations Under the Bed or in the Closet
While you might automatically think to store Christmas decorations in your attic or garage, neither location is ideal. This is because temperatures and humidity vary during the year in both locations. To keep your decorations in the best possible condition, store them under your bed or in the closet.
Keep the Warm Air in This Winter
During these winter months, if your attic isn’t properly insulated, air will escape and cause you to spend more money on your energy bill than necessary. Contact First Quality Roofing & Insulation at 702-262-7847 to make an appointment for a free consultation today.
