Keeping Your Home Cool
Humans have been trying to stay warm or cool for as long as we have existed. In fact, it’s one of those things that will never change, and the fight for cool or warm temperatures continues to this day. However, unlike the cavemen days, there is a lot more technology and expertise available to make your home comfortable than just a fire or a door or shutters. This technique is called insulation, and the idea is simple; to keep the temperatures indoors at optimum levels, regardless of what it is outside. If your home is like an icebox in the winter or an oven during the summer, it’s most likely because of bad, or not enough, insulation.
The R-Value
Insulation of a house is measured according to a rating system called an R-value. Without going too deep into the physics of it, an R-value is simply a way to measure the resistance of heat flow. Older houses (the ones built before the 1990s) will usually have a lower R-value. Houses built before the 1990s will typically have an R-value of 19 or lower. Houses built today will have a value of R-49. The reason why older houses have a low R-value is simple; they were not designed and built with the right specifications and materials to dissipate hot/cold air efficiently.
The Remedy
For those of you who live in houses that were built a decade or more ago, it is possible to increase the R-value of your home and make it much more pleasant to live in. First Quality Roofing & Insulation tackles climate control of a house in several different ways; with blown-in attic insulation and radiant barrier paints. Once these are installed, you will see a significant reduction in your energy bills also.
Blown-in attic insulation is perhaps the fastest way to help keep things cool or warm in the house. Fiberglass with a high R-value rating is blown into the attic, creating a blanket-type layer across the tresses. As soon as the attic gets this layer of fiberglass, you will instantly feel the difference.
Radiant Barrier: The roof is, after all, your first line of defense against the elements. Therefore, the importance of giving it proper treatment cannot be overstated. A layer of special radiant barrier paint is applied to keep out the UV rays and reflect the sunlight.
