If you're looking for ways to cut your costs as a homeowner, you may need to look no further than your attic!
When your insulation upstairs isn't doing its job, you could be wasting money month after month in needless heating and cooling bills. In fact, you could be spending up to 35% more each month than you need to, if only you had better insulation in your attic.
If cutting your energy bills by 1/3 sounds like a good idea, here are the three main attic insulation options available.
A Quick Overview Of Your Three Main Attic Insulation Options
1 - Batts
Batts are the cheapest form of attic insulation, but unfortunately, they're also the least effective. Available in either fiberglass or cotton-based versions, batts are long strips of insulation which are laid directly onto the floor of the attic.
The problem is, it's extremely hard to make batts line up perfectly with the contours of your ceiling, and gaps will quickly wreck the efficiency of insulation. Few batts installations provide truly good insulation.
2 - Blown
Blown insulation is pumped in through a hose system, shooting small chunks of insulation all over the floor of the attic. When done properly, blown insulation can effectively cover all the spaces that need to be insulated, and it can adapt well to other installations in your attic such as wiring.
For those seeking eco-friendly attic insulation options, blown insulation can be a good choice. Cellulose-based insulation is simply made of recycled newspaper. That also makes it safe for children, unlike fiberglass.
3 - Sprayed
Unlike the other two attic insulation options, sprayed insulation goes onto the ceiling of your attic using a foamy combination of insulation and glue. While it's more expensive than other options, this is the best choice for those who want to use their attics as working or living space, since it leaves the floor completely untouched.
Likewise, if you have a lot of wiring or duct work in your attic, sprayed foam insulation leaves them easily-accessible and within the insulated space. The foam is also more child-friendly than any fiberglass-based insulation options.
