Too Warm Here, Too Cold There; Possible Causes and Definite Solutions to Temperature Imbalances In Your Home

bigstock--166278920.jpgFor every time you've been chided for believing that “for every problem there is a solution,” this is your moment of redemption.

If your home is plagued by uneven temperatures – with one room that is too warm while the room right next door is too cool – you are absolutely spot-on: this problem does indeed have a solution.

That said, it takes some investigatory work to discover the source of the problem. One or more issues could be conspiring to make you jump up and down to adjust the thermostat in a futile effort to make your home feel more comfortable.

You are correct to assume your home might sorely need an influx of Las Vegas quality attic insulation. But until First Quality Roofing & Insulation can inspect your home to find out for sure, consider the five most common problems – and solutions:

Problem No. 1: Lack of Insulation

Solution: A quick visible check of your attic ought to reveal a good deal; if you can see the floor joists, you probably need insulation to help moderate the temperatures in your home. Las Vegas quality attic insulation also should be evenly distributed to a depth of between 10 and 14 inches.

Problem No. 2: Leaky or Uninsulated Ductwork

Solution: Cracks, gaps, holes, disconnects and drooping mastic tape can provide an escape route for warm or cool air that flows through ducts. These repairs can be time consuming but are worthwhile. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates faulty ducts cause the average home to lose up to 25 percent of the energy they carry, contributing to temperature imbalances.

Problem No. 3: Greater Warmth on the Second Story of a multi-level home

Solution: You already know heat naturally rises, sometimes causing upper-level room temperatures to be as much as 10 degrees warmer than rooms downstairs. A practical solution is a zoned system, which can divide a home into two zones – first story and second story – with a separate thermostat on each floor. A temperature sensor controls the dampers in the ducts, opening and closing them as necessary to keep temperatures steady.

Problem No. 4: Too few return vents

Solution: Leaving all the doors in your home open may help foster return airflow. Otherwise, adding more return ducts is an obvious solution.

Problem No. 5: An HVAC system that is oversized or undersized

Solution: An oversized system will turn off too quickly, before rooms fully cool down; an undersized system may never be able to cool an entire home properly. Fans can help circulate cool air to warmer rooms in the first scenario while a second or replacement system are really the only long-term solutions for homes with an undersized system.

Other factors could be conspiring to create uneven temperatures in your home, including:

  • The heat generated in a room – and not just in the kitchen but a home office teeming with heat-producing electronics.
  • A room's proximity to the sun – or lack of it – the number and size of the windows in it and the outdoor screening – or lack of it – provided by trees and shrubs.
  • A room's proximity to the main thermostat (since it regulates the temperature most effectively in the room in which it is located).

Like many of your neighbors, you too could benefit from Las Vegas quality attic insulation. Take our quiz to confirm your suspicions – because for every problem, there really is a solution with First Quality Roofing & Insulation.
