Which Home Insulation Should You Choose in Las Vegas?

Posted by First Quality Roofing & Insulation on Feb 16, 2023 10:26:47 PM

Quality home insulation is essential to keep your Las Vegas home cool in the summer and warm in the winter without running your HVAC system constantly or spending astronomical amounts on your utility bills. For the Las Vegas area, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends R-49 to R-60 insulation for attic insulation, R-19 for the floors, and R-15 to R-20 for exterior walls using a combination of in-wall and exterior insulation.

If your home falls short of these recommendations, or you would like to reduce your heating and cooling costs, here is a guide to the most popular types of home insulation and how they compare:

Fiberglass Batts

Made in widths to fit snugly between wall studs, floor joists, or rafters, fiberglass batts offer an R-Value of between 3 to 3.8 per inch of thickness. They are quick and easy to install, and quite economical, but they can lose up to 50% of their effectiveness when compressed, and they are harder to install in existing homes.

Blown-In Fiberglass

Ideal for existing homes, blown-in fiberglass can quickly be added to attics and finished walls with minimal work or repairs. Depending on the brand and installation technique, blown-in fiberglass can have an R-Value of 2.2 to 3.4 per inch of thickness. It features great thermal performance and air sealing abilities, but its lightweight nature can mean it loses performance in extreme cold if not installed properly.

Blown-In Cellulose

Made primarily from treated, recycled newspaper, cellulose insulation is resistant to fire, mold, and pests, and it can be blown into place in existing attics and walls. With an R-Value of 3.2 to 3.8 per inch, it offers slightly better thermal performance than blown-in fiberglass, but it is also prone to settling, which will decrease its effectiveness over time.

Spray Foam

Closed-cell spray foam insulation expands to fill wall cavities and conform around objects like outlet boxes, creating a tight air seal. With an R-Value of 6 to 6.5 per inch, it offers impressive thermal performance, but it is quite costly, and if it is installed incorrectly, it could pose health risks due to improper curing.
