Perhaps the most obvious telltale sign of a broken roof is water damage. If water leaks into your attic or other rooms, it could be because you have holes on the roof, or the flashing has degenerated.

2. Staining, blistering, or bubbling on walls and ceilings

Another dead giveaway is circular water stains on your ceiling or walls. Sure, other factors may cause it, but the culprit could be your roof.

Alternatively, you may notice flat surfaces blistering or hear water dripping on your ceiling or walls. These can be signs water is slicing through your roof into your home.

3. Shingle issues

When inspecting your gutters, if you notice pieces of shingles or the heavy deposits of the shingles’ protective topcoat granules, it means the shingles may need replacing. Similarly, conduct urgent repairs or replacements when the shingles are:

  1. Cracked  
  2. Missing
  3. Curled
  4. Broken

Mortar is the material used for bedding ridges – these are the outer areas where the two roof slopes join. It also holds the verges or the outer roof edges. Since mortar has a limited time span, you should check it occasionally.

Once you notice the mortar is falling apart before its allocated time, and there are signs of early degeneration, you have a broken roof.

5. Sagging or broken roof

This will need some keen observation if you are to catch this defect. The top of your roof should typically sit flush along the ridge.

If the middle is sagging and you don’t catch it early enough, it could lead to roof collapse. Some of the issues that cause roof sagging include:
